SUSTAINABILITY and FUNCTION
The collection I would be presenting today is my graduation show. I specifically named it Mad Years 2022, the year when pandemic took over the world. When thinking about the ongoing extreme violence and uncertainty our society face, such as the war in Ukraine and Russia, raging diseases and an overload of information. I wanted to create a sense of personal security to the garments. The main inspiration was when I unfortunately was send to quarantine in a facility outside of my house due to strict government regulations, it was 2 weeks of uncertainty and loneliness. With a hour notice I had to pack the essentials and leave for the motel.
It was an endless loop of helplessness and routinely health check-up. I found comfort curling into a fetus position and enclosing in the blankets that were provided, wearing only oversize hoodies and T-shirt was my new norm.
I wanted to convey the frustration and challenges we have faced as an population and I wanted to create a capsule collection that could equip those that will continue on to the chaos that life is. I employed close fitting nylon fabrics as a metaphor which symbolizes “A safe haven” that is flexible enough to withstand informal and external struggles. I started my collection by A safe haven’ that is flexible enough to withstand informal and external struggles. I started my collection by observing the interaction between the body and garments how does clothes carters towards the human form and everyday life.
When drawing upon social and political issues. I thought about the space which surrounds the body, and I started to look into the diaries written during quarantine. The needs and wants and how that would change how people view clothes.
I wondered what a modern, nomadic world citizen would have as a personal reference to their past and what they might need for the journey ahead.
