TFDA, Taiwan Fashion Design Award competition, now in its 37th edition, has received a total of 485 entries from 19 countries and regions. The participating emerging designers hail from Australia, Bulgaria, China, France, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Israel, Italy, Japan, Macau, Malaysia, Peru, Portugal, Spain, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam. Today, from over two thousand submissions, 12 finalists have been selected to compete for the highest honor in the upcoming grand finale on the stage.
The entries in this year's competition have showcased creativity, technical expertise, and unique perspectives, covering a wide range of themes. From the desire for relief and respite in a high-pressure society, to the exploration of the inner self on a spiritual level, and reflections on personal growth, family connections, and existential contemplation of life and death. The emerging designers have also drawn inspiration from the beauty of the natural world, conveying a warning about the crisis of global warming and expressing the pursuit of dreams and the balance between reality and illusion. Additionally, they have reflected on shaping and envisioning the future, drawing inspiration from cinematic narratives, and contemplating the unease and uncertainty brought about by pandemics and wars. From classic fashion to avant-garde trends, from intricate tailoring to bold creativity, these designs exemplify the diversity and innovation within the field of fashion design.
As the most iconic official competition in Asia, this edition has invited esteemed international experts to participate in the preliminary selection process. Renowned designers include Fujiwara Dai (Japan), Maroussia Rebecq (France), and Stephane Dou (Taiwan). Fashion media professionals include Ellen Yang (Taiwan), Publisher & Chief Operating Officer of Hearst Taiwan, and Valéria Bessolo Llopiz (France), Senior Vice President and International Director of ELLE & ELLE DECO. Furthermore, industry experts Tomonori Matsui (Japan), CEO of ONE O Ltd., Sunny Liu (Taiwan), Director of Strategy and Planning Department of Qsquare, and Charlotte Chiang (Taiwan), Director of TTF's Fashion Design Department. The judges deemed the entries in this edition exceptionally outstanding, showing amazing performance and diversity in terms of appearance, contour and texture innovation, which made the decision hesitant. Ultimately, the chosen works aligned with the strong creative concepts, sustainable practices, positive image, and professional qualities. The judges advise emerging designers to focus on future lifestyle trends, with user considerations as the starting point, in order to create more pieces that combine practicality and aesthetic appeal. Therefore, it is crucial to enhance both the wearability and production details to meet international standards. The judges also expect the selected works will ultimately demonstrate the highest level of completeness.
TFDA is organized by Industrial Development Bureau (IDB), Ministry of Economic Affairs and executed by Taiwan Textile Federation (TTF). This competition provides a platform for young design talents to showcase their abilities and is an important event for talent discovery and industry development. This year, it is sponsored by Coddy Global Ltd., Fortune Industrial and Commercial Development Foundation, Lealea Enterprise Co., Ltd., Li Peng Enterprise Co., Ltd., New Wide Enterprise Co., Ltd., and New Wide Garment Co., Ltd., offering the reward of $10,000, $5,000, $3,000 and $1,000 for the first prize, second prize, third prize and finalist prize. The 12 finalists have entered the final three-month sprint stage and will compete on the stage of Taipei Fashion Week on October 11, and the works will also be displayed statically for five days.
